FALLING FOR FALL

leather wallets

Hello Friends;

The end of summer is always a little sad. You can find yourself in full mourning for hot, sunny days, linen clothes, and lying on a beach with a summer cocktail in hand. However over time, day by day, you realize the season of fall certainly has its advantages. There is a certain "back to school" energy in the air, mainly due to many students starting a new school year. However, the fall is the start of many events in NYC including fashion week, the art world showcasing new artists and cultural institutions around the world starting their seasons at the beginning of fall. Sweater weather is also upon us so it's time to switch out the closet, put away those summer clothes and bathing suits and replace them with sweaters, blazers, wools, smart-looking coats, boots, hats, and all your favorite leather accessories including gloves and Patent of Heart handbags and small leather goods.

Living in New York City, I love watching autumn movies about the very city I live in. My favorite by far is "When Harry Met Sally". The whole movie itself can act as a Pinterest Board for "NYC Autumn in Love!" Meg Ryan in her fall tweeds and felt hats, Billy Crystal in his denim, leather jackets, and cable knit sweaters walking around New York City in the heights of fall foliage showcasing autumnal and jewel tone colors. The story at the heart of this rom-com is can you stay lovers with your friend or be a friend to your lover?

With the days getting shorter and the temperatures dropping you tend to find more indoor cultural places to explore in New York City. There is a plethora of cultural events to attend with art galleries, museums, concert halls, the opera, the ballet, and modern dance plus many on and off Broadway plays. The Metropolitan Museum of Art located in Central Park is the perfect way to spend a fall day as you can take a long walk in the park, cross the great lawn to the museum and meander for hours in countless galleries viewing a survey of art from the cavemen to Contemporary Art. Currently now at The Met in the Contemporary Photography Gallery, there is an exhibition of husband and wife collaborators Bernd and Hilla Becher, the German architectural photographers who are world renowned for exploring the common denominators and differences of factories, water towers, and utilitarian buildings around the world. The exhibition is a retrospective of their work in their signature black and white grids that dates back from the 60s to now. It's not to be missed.

One of the most thrilling past times of fall in New York City is taking out your fall clothes from storage just in time for Fashion Week. Wool and cashmere sweaters, tweed and wool blazers, leather coats, boots, and accessories like hats, gloves, and scarves start making an appearance in your closet. In "When Harry Met Sally" Meg Ryan's character Sally was all about layering her fall wardrobe with classic fall colors and accessories. We at Patent of Heart took inspiration from the movie to create our fall color palette with beautiful jewel tones and neutral metallics for the right pops of color.

Meg Ryan set a trend for felted bowler hats the year "When Harry Met Sally" came out and The Hat Shop, NYC in Soho has the perfect update to this classic for this fall. It's a unisex Western fedora called, "Jack" that is made from 100% rabbit 165-gram western weight felt. Available in black, white, and silver with matching ribbon and rawhide, this classic will have you loving this fall trend without looking too 80s.

One of the most important accessories you will need for fall is your handbag and Patent of Heart is introducing a few new silhouettes this season that are more voluminous than in previous seasons. One such style is the "Diane Hobo Bag". We love how classic with a fun twist our hobo bags are! This bag puts functionality at the forefront and will comfortably hold all your essentials. It comes with two straps to fit your style, and here is the fun twist; your wide strap color will match the color of the inner slip pocket. The main compartment is spacious and secured with a zipper top. The shorter wide strap can be worn alongside the longer thin strap or alone, allowing you to throw it over your shoulder. Dressed up or down, worn together or alone, we hope you can make this style your own and have fun with it. Most important, Patent of Heart, a woman-owned business, is made in a sustainable manner. Made with 100% re-purposed high-quality leather collected from tanneries in Istanbul, Turkey; giving a second life and preventing them from entering landfills. Plus our brand has a heart as you will make an impact with every purchase: The purchase of every Patent of Heart Bag contributes towards a project to provide education to young women in Eastern Turkey. Elif Akaydin, the founder & designer; is very passionate about creating awareness of this mission.

As fall continues in NYC, we start seeing many signs of Halloween to come. There is a big Halloween parade on Halloween night every year that goes up Sixth Avenue towards Chelsea that attracts crowds from around the world as you are allowed to walk the parade if you are in costume. However, the most cutest Halloween parade in NYC happens the day before Halloween at Washington Square Park. It is the "Dog Day Halloween Costume Party & Parade". This October 30th come to Washington Square Park at noon to watch the parade of dogs and judging for amazing prizes for best costumes (11 am if you want to register and enter your pup for the parade). This event has grown year after year with more wild and creative costumes hijacking all the attention from humans (btw, humans are encouraged greatly to dress up with their dogs). It's the perfect event for children of all ages and their best canine friends.

One of the finalists from recent years. Creativity is key and it's a very competitive contest.

If you are planning to attend the Halloween Dog Costume Party and Parade with friends whether they be human or canine, the perfect accessory to head to the park is the Mini Leather Phone Purse by Patent of Heart.
